Kick off the Hispanic Heritage Month Latino Film Festival with a special half-hour screening of Sundance Festival Freedom of Expression award winner and Emmy-nominated documentary Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary, made by former Los Angeles public school teacher Laura Angelica Simon. With cameras borrowed from the Los Angeles Museum of Tolerance, Simon set out to capture the emotional toll of Proposition 187 on her school. Following the film, Simon joins a panel discussion moderated by Washington Post staff writer Roberto Suro, author of Strangers Among Us: How Latino Immigration is Transforming America; U.S. Representative and Smithsonian Regent Esteban Torres, who grew up just a few miles away from where the documentary was filmed; Dan Stein, executive director of Federation of American Immigration Reform, a Washington, D.C.- based organization that supports the curbing of immigration; and Jorge Anselme of the Center for Equal Opportunity.

THE ART OF JACK DELANO

This exhibition traces the social themes found in photographer Jack Delano's work over the last 50 years, including images of the Depression and Puerto Rican life during and after World War II. Many of the photographs have become important social documents of the New Deal's Farm Security Administration. The multitalented Delano was also a filmmaker, composer, and illustrator of children's books. The exhibition is organized by the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) with the generous support of Banco Popular.

The Guadalupe- Hidalgo Performance Dinner coincides with the Smithsonian exhibition commemorating the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Guadalupe-Hidalgo Treaty that ended the U.S.-Mexico war and granted the United States half of what was then Mexican territory. This event is part of the series ENCUENTROS: Latino America at the Smithsonian.

El ARTE DE JACK DELANO

Esta exhibición examine los temas sociales que inspiraron la labor del fotógrafo Jack Delano durante el pasado medio siglo, incluyendo imágenes de la Depresión y de la vida en Puerto Rico durante y después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Muchas de sus fotografías se han convertido en importantes documentos sociales del Servicio de Previsión Agraria, durante el llamado New Deal que lanzó el gobierno del presidente F.D.Roosevelt. Además de fotógrafo, Delano fue cineasta, compositor e ilustrador de libros infantiles. Esta muestra fue organizada por el Servicio Smithsonian de Exhibiciones Itinerantes (SITES) con generoso apoyo de Banco Popular.

FIESTA MUSICAL 1998. CEIEBRANDO LA HERENCIA HISPANA

E1 Zoológico presenta Fiesta Musical, un festival de dos días de duración con jazz latino, bailes de la región, una exhibición de arte colombiano y un patio de comidas latinoamericanas, como también presentaciones de animales y actividades prácticas. Un desfile de músicos y bailarines ataviados festivamente, a la usanza de Carnaval, abrirá la Fiesta Musical el sábado a las 11:00 a.m. Auspiciado por Amigos del Zoo Nacional y el Comité Organizador del Mes de la Herencia Hispana, de la Oficina de Educación de la Institución Smithsonian.
